Humber Hawks win first ever OCAA rugby sevens championship
Humber takes gold in the fastest growing sport in Canada.
The newly formed Humber Women’s rugby sevens team won the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championship in the sports first year of operation.
The championship match was played at Sheridan College in Oakville, where no team had the home field advantage.
Rugby sevens is played similarly to the classic 15 game, but there are two major differences. Seven players on each team instead of 15, and seven minute halves as opposed to 40 minute halves.
The Hawks dominated the regular season with a record of 14-2.
Their efforts put them in the final against the Conestoga Condors (12-4) which was the only team to beat the Hawks in the regular season.
Humber dominated Conestoga 50-0 which secured the title as the first team to win the OCAA rugby sevens championship.
“That was probably the most fun I’ve had playing rugby in a few years,” said Charli Mocon, MVP of the championship game and second-year Humber student.
Mocon scored 33 points that day.
“Our team specifically has a lot of fun. We have a much bigger team than the rest of the schools, a lot of really good support from our non dressing players and our second string,” said Mocon.
“Everything can change from season to season, so its surprising when a team is able to have a history of winning with a completely different set of players,” said Doug Gallatly, executive director of the OCAA.
“That’s what makes sports so exciting, that everything can change. And Humber has been consistently great for the last few years,” said Gallatly.
Humber’s rugby history is filled with championship victories and the team was eager to continue the tradition of greatness.
“It was a great accomplishment for our team,” said coach Dale Essue.
Essue said the team always had the championship in mind and was determined to make it there.
“Our target was to peak and play our best rugby at provincials and we did just that,” said Essue.
