Canadian Hip Hop
LASCELLE MURRAY-
This past year has proven to be an incredible one for Canadian Hip Hop acts on various levels. The underground scene was buzzing with new and creative
artists from around the country trying to make their identity known. Mid-level acts such as K-OS, Saukrates and Classified all made heads turn with new music.
The Canadian battle scene, where artists use rap to poke fun at one another, has increased in popularity, and grabbed the attention of the USA battle scene creating cross-country battles. These competitions feature both American and Canadian battle rappers competing for the same prize. And last, but certainly not the least, there was that one Canadian rapper from Degrassi who had the whole world interested in his Canadian flavor of music. You know that kid, Drake.
The Canadian Hip-Hop scene’s future has never seemed so bright. It seems that with the rise of Drake more and more people are looking at Toronto, and Canada, to see what our nation has to offer the world of hip-hop.
The up coming year looks to be just as bright as 2010, for Canada’s hip hop scene. Drake was able to release his debut album which reached Platinum status within a week. New acts such as JD Era, The Kid Famous and Tory Lanez have begun to make noise in the music industry with various mixtapes. They have also made guest appearances on tracks for other musical artists; which include but are not limited to, Waka Flocka, Sean Kingston, Justin Bieber and Diddy.
The Canadian Hip Hop scene is thriving. It’s alive and as of right now it is better than it’s ever been. From all over the world Hip Hop heads are keeping their ears to the ground and eyes glued to their computer screens, looking online for the latest in Canadian Hip Hop. Just hoping to get a little dose of that Northern Exposure.
