0We Mean Business! Guelph-Humber’s New Media Business Program
Guelph-Humber media studies students can look forward to a new area of specialization. The media business program has been introduced as a way to emphasize the importance of business in media.
Program Head of media studies, Jerry Chomyn says the new and innovative program will be available to students in their third and fourth year. Chomyn, whose career included the sales and marketing aspect of media believes that it is underrepresented in media courses.
“There’s tons of content creators and we need those but there also has to be people that sell the advertising to pay for those creations,” Chomyn said.
The program will cover areas such as marketing, branding, advertising and leadership. “The strongest part of this program is its emphasis on selling; selling yourself, selling your product, and selling your concept,” he said.
Giovanna Okereke, is a first year media student at Guelph-Humber. According to her, the media business course will help her in understanding and being prepared for what to expect in the future.
“Marketing is very important in the world we are living in. I’m hoping to learn how to market and sell products and myself because it is important when you’re looking for a job,” she said.
In her search for the right university to attend, Okereke says she knew that Guelph-Humber would be suitable for her learning style and aid her in achieving her goals. Although she is going into the media field, she thinks it is important to have business experience.
In the first year of media studies, students may choose leadership as one of their electives. The media business program consists of a big leadership component, which they can familiarize themselves with and gain experience in.
Client Relations and Project Management Professor Wayne Ferrell is no stranger to the business world. With 30 years of experience in Business Governance, and Marketing and Sales, he is aware of the doors that the knowledge of business opens. The new addition to the media studies program he says is a fabulous idea.
“Business is really the engine of the company, that’s where most of the employment opportunities are.” Although client management and media business both deal with similar aspects, Professor Ferrell says that the nature of the clients are different.
Chomyn says the media business program is an ideal program for students interested in both media and business. The media business program starts in fall 2016 in addition to the existing four programs.
