This Thursday, Guelph-Humber and Humber Students get an opportunity to win $1000 in just 24 hour.
Ten students have been chosen to participate in the “Big Brother Humber
Edition”. Contestants were asked to fill out a lengthy application form and encouraged not to hold back. They also had to submit a video online explaining why they should be a contestant on Humber’s Big Brother 4.
HSF Programming Director Aaron Miller described the competition as a smaller version of the reality show, “We have selected students to live in a house that we built for them.” Miller joked that it is more of a cage then a house, “We just prefer using the term house anyways they are going to live there for 24 hours, we are going to have head of household competitions and they are going to vote each other out until there are two finalists left.”
Within the 24 hours there will be a variety of competitions held to determine the Head of household who will be in charge of picking two participants as nominees for eviction. The other house guests will vote on whom they want to eliminate out of the possible two nominees.
Once the number dwindles down from ten to two the crowd will vote on who receives the $1000 Grand Prize. Second place gets a trip for two for spring break.
Miller said the process of selecting contestants was interesting, “We tried to have somebody represent all parts of the campus, and so we wanted to have people that fit the archetypes. We wanted to have the jock, the computer guy and the mean girls, you want to have a little bit of everything so we went through the videos and pick something that would be a good representative.”
The videos of the finalists are up on the Humber Life website. Each finalist have a short video up saying why they wanted to participate in the competition. Their reasons varied from needing the money for tuition and school expenses to personal expenses.
Miller said students are going to be very limited when it comes to communicating to the outside world to imitate the reality show, “Students get three luxury items that they can bring in but they can’t be any electronics or any communication device.” Finalists will get a penalty nomination if they even attempt to communicate with the friends outside the cage.
The competition will take place in a span of 24 hours on November 25th. Students can stop by and see the event live or watch it from the comfort of their own home on the Humber Life website.
