Humber Athletics: Taking Athletes to the Next Level

Humber athletics maintains the winning culture at the school by having its athletes work with a high performance centre.

Humber’s High Performance Centre (HPC) was created by Teresa Arnini, the program coordinator, who said that the program was created, “to support and educate our varsity student-athletes and teams on how to enhance their athletic performance.”

The program is offered exclusively to the athletes and are designed by the strength and conditioning coaches.

The programs are also based on the needs of the sport, athlete, team and coaches.

Joseph Latina, one of the strength and conditioning coaches also added that it isn’t just the “typical weight training” program.

“Right now in the OCAA, we’re probably the only college that has a department that has anything like this,” Latina said.

The coaches with the program work with every single team and athlete as opposed to just one coach assigned to a specific team, he explained.

It also includes the Athletic Therapy Department, nutritional education, long term athletic development and year-round recovery and movement sessions.

Latina also added that, “unlike other programs, this isn’t just focused on building muscle, because that isn’t what is the most important. Our focus here is to teach the athletes the proper movements, mechanics and information that will help them perform at a higher level.”

Since the program’s inception, Humber Athletics has won 19 CCAA national championships (a national best) and 64 OCAA championships (a provincial best).

“Whenever you think of Humber, you think of winning. The school has a high standard to maintain and we help create that winning culture,” said Latina

Andrew Gaio, a member of the Humber Hawks men’s soccer team, also said that this program not only helped build his performance, but the team’s performance.

“The training was not like I was expecting. They really gave us all the tools to train our body and to become better athletes. This type of training also helped build the team’s chemistry, as everyone is in there working their butts off, and it’s all going towards a bigger goal” said Gaio.

The program is now in its seventh year and the athletes will have access to the program all year-round.
