Wellness day at Humber

Almost all students cope with feeling overwhelmed. However, there are a lot of ways to help relieve that stress according to healthcare professionals who recently hosted an event for mental health and wellness at Humber.

“We don’t realize that we have great de-stressing tools already attached to us. … We’re encouraging students to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, like technology and things like that, and focus more on what you have for yourself to de-stress,” said Dana Nunes who is a registered nurse in the Health Services and Student Wellness Centre.

She said students can control all five senses to centre themselves, as a way to distract from the stresses and problems of their everyday life.

Stretching and meditating are also effective ways of relaxing your body, according to the massage therapists at the event.

“We just want students to breathe. It’s so simple but we’re a culture that holds our breath over everything and we need to remind ourselves to calm down and breathe,” said Anna Leyva who is a massage therapist for Massage on Wheels, a company invited to take part in the Humber College event. Leyva was one of three massage therapists who gave free back and hand massages to students, while also giving them advice on relaxation methods.

“We also suggest essential oils too. Like lavender helps you control your nervous system and helps you sleep, while peppermint can give you that mental stimulation before your exam.”

The event was held in the third floor library where they featured an oxygen bar, Zen room and free massages for anyone who attended.

Aliya Dalfen who is a librarian at Humber said, “we hope to do this annually around this time. We just want students aware of the services we have available here at the school for anyone who is feeling like things are too much.”

Humber encourages any students who are feeling stressed or overwhelmed to visit the Student Wellness Centre on campus where counselors are available to talk five days a week.
