Humber basketball great unparalleled

In the history of Humber College men’s basketball, no player has ever recorded 500 points and rebounds in a career, until Tyrone Dickson did in a 91-42 win over Cambrian College on Jan 23.

The team’s starting power forward grabbed 12 rebounds on the night with his final one being number 500 for his career. Dickson said he was not even aware that he set the record until after the game. “When I found out, I was honestly shocked.”

Starting point guard Gibson Eduful explained since Dickson joined the program in 2012, he has been a big part of the team especially on defence. “A lot of us know if we are playing defence against a relatively good guard if we get beat Tyrone’s back there to alter his shot,” said Eduful.

Eduful explained Dickson makes his job on offence much easier because Dickson creates more room on the court, which opens up plays for the whole team. Over four years on the team, the two players have developed chemistry on the court, which allows Eduful to get Dickson the ball in situations he would not be able to with other players.

While much focus is put on Dickson’s ability to play game changing defence, head coach Shawn Collins said he brings so much more to the team. “What sets Dickson apart from other players is his hustle,” he added.

Collins said Dickson’s high tempo play is a type of leadership quality. “He doesn’t ask anybody to do something he wouldn’t do himself,” Collins added. “When there is a loose ball, Tyrone is the first guy to dive on the floor for it.”

Over his time in the program, Dickson has grown into the leadership role. When he first got to the program, he led entirely by his actions on the court and was not very vocal, but over the last few seasons he has started to become more vocal, said Collins.

People have always recognized him for what he brings to the team on the court but since setting the record, Dickson said even more people have been noticing and congratulating him on the achievement.

Dickson explained that as a team leader, now in his final year, he has learned to bring energy to the team. Whenever one of his teammates is down, he tries to pick them up. The team is only as strong as its weakest link and it is his job to help out wherever he can, Dickson explained.

Setting the record was great and it is a special feeling knowing players are going to look up at his record for years to come, said Dickson. But he has his sights set on helping the team to repeat as champions on the national level and winning on the provincial level for the first time in his career, he said.
