KinSoc presents ‘Get Up and Move’

Just get up and move. A simple message from the kinesiology and family & community studies at the University of Guelph-Humber. The departments teamed up to teach students about the links between physical and mental health.

On Jan. 27, the Kinesiology Society (KinSoc) held an event called ‘Get Up and Move.’ The Head of KinSoc, Malik Corbett, said this was the second annual event they have put on this year at Guelph-Humber.

Avanti Patel, a member of KinSoc said that the event is a way to get people active and moving. “It’s easy to get up and move throughout your day, and we are here to teach people how important the benefits are overall,” said Patel.

Patel said she believes events like this are very beneficial to students in programs outside of kinesiology. “I find that it informs students because in kinesiology we know what to do but in other programs they might not know proper form,” she said.

Corbett agreed with Patel adding that they want to change the mindsets of students. “The trend of health right now is going to chronic disease and an event like this shows people at a young age that you don’t need to have a gym membership to be active,” said Corbett.

The event had multiple tables each representing different ways to keep your body and mind healthy. Students running the event demonstrated exercises you can do at home if you don’t have time for the gym, proper form, and yoga and meditation.

There were also tables promoting mental health which had a station to pick up a print-out of an adult colouring book which can be used as a stress reliever. They also had make your own fruit boxes to promote healthy eating and on-and-off school resources for students struggling with their mental health.

First-year kinesiology student and running a table at the event Danielle Torrie said she joined KinSoc so that she could be more involved with her program and because she wants to teach students the benefits of being healthy.

“I believe you should be active as many ways as possible in your life,” said Torrie. She also said exercising can really affect your mental health in a very positive way.

Fourth-year FCSS students, Emma Pratt and Lindsay VanDekerkhove ran a self-care table at the event. They said that this is their second year helping with ‘Get Up and Move’ and they enjoy the relationship that FCSS has with kinesiology. “We want to promote the fact that physical health and mental health go hand-in-hand,” said Pratt.

Third-year kinesiology student, Tori Lee was one of the students who attended the event. She said she thinks it was a success. “This event benefited me because I was able to do some tests and learn that I need to work on my flexibility,” she said.

KinSoc tries to have about three or four events each semester, this was the first big event. They will also be holding a nutrition event, and a kin-talk that will hope to involve elite athletes.

This year the students involved tried to attract more attention with posters around the school and reminders on Facebook. Corbett said they had a bigger turn out than last year and they are hoping to have even more students come check out their events in the future.
