Students, Staff Happy with Humber LRC

With first semester wrapping up, the new Learning Resource Commons’ consolidation of student and academic services is proving successful for Humber College.

The six-floor LRC building, which began its first full semester of operation this past September, provides services and access to students twenty-four seven. It provides a bigger, enhanced library and brings students services under one roof.

The LRC has been warmly received from students and staff. According to President of Humber Students’ Federation Ahmed Tahir, the building is a step in the right direction for Humber.

“Everything is now centralized. You have the learning commons, student health, student life, the math and writing centre and the library all in one place,” he explained.

Tahir said the improvements to the student’s resources for their education is because the majority of the resources are in one place. Before students walked to the NX Building for the library, H Building for career services, or across campus to A Building for the health centre. “We are catching up to student demand,” he said.

Tahir mentioned the building allows a better social environment for students with fewer barriers, where they can interact and make friends with others they usually would not. He has noticed University of Guelph-Humber and Humber students are not divided as before, instead together at the LRC. “It’s the serendipity of interaction,” said Tahir.

He said the building’s consolidation of resources is another check to the list of Humber’s uniqueness amongst other colleges and universities. He said the success of students is because of the building’s atmosphere. “A happy student is a happy, better college,” Tahir said.

Tahir is not the only one pleased with the success of the LRC.

President of Humber Chris Whitaker said the factors in the building’s success are the consolidation and easier accessibility of student support services, as well as the space to accommodate students that want to study or hangout. He described the LRC as, “A one-stop shop.”

Whitaker said students enjoy various modes of study space and spaces to occupy, because each student has different study methods. He said, “They like that because they have choices.” He explained there are quiet spaces for those who prefer individual studying and large open spaces for those who prefer group work.

In regards to the twenty-four seven services and access for students, Whitaker said, “It’s a nice addition and value add to the environment that we already have at Humber.”

He explained the LRC has helped students’ education because of the various co-circular services the building offers, such as the writing centre, health and wellness and career advisors. He said the building improves the student’s retention rate as everything they need is in one location. “Those are factors in the success of students,” he said.

Whitaker said the building is also a great innovation for staff as, “It shows we’re trying to be responsive to the needs of students.”
