0Guelph-Humber graduates give back on Alumni Night
Alumni Night is an annual networking event hosted by the University of Guelph-Humber Accounting Council meant for business alumni to share their post-graduate experiences with students. Arjuna Sarathchandran, graduate of 2009, said the night is his most enjoyable volunteer event out of all those he attends each year.
The event was hosted on November 18 in the seventh semester hall at Humber College where Sarathchandran and eight of his fellow alumni socialized with around 30 students throughout the evening.
It was Sarathchandran’s fifth year returning to the event, he said he connected the best with the students of Guelph-Humber because they shared similar struggles and ambitions in the same learning environment.
“Everybody needs guidance. It’s always very eye opening to hear peoples experiences, I see the value and the students see the value and it’s kind of my chance to give back and a chance to come back to school so it’s a win, win,” he said.
Varun Sehgal graduated in 2007 and said it was his first time at the event, he said he had not connected with the school since then and thought that the Alumni Night was a great way to do so.
“It doesn’t matter if they’re in first or forth year, what I’ve learned is that [the students] all have a strong desire to work in the field and it shows that they have a goal in their minds that they want to get to,” said Sehgal.
President of the Guelph-Humber Accounting Council, Mojib Kazimi, said he starting calling alumni in May to put the event together. He said the night was important for both the students and the graduates to be able to connect and learn from each other.
“It’s a community, we’re considered a family whether we’ve never met each other and I feel like that’s the main reason the alumni come back here; to help the future of Guelph-Humber,” said Kazimi.
