0Stay tuned: 2016 a big year for Guelph-Humber
The University of Guelph-Humber looks forward to a big milestone, as the first graduating class is set to celebrate their 10-year anniversary in 2016.
There have been alumni events running since the summer, such as attending Blue Jays games and golf tournaments. Similar events continue to run throughout this academic year leading up to the reunion in the spring of next year.
Marlene Scheel is the Manager of Alumni Advancement and works closely with many Guelph-Humber alumni.
“Stay tuned,” Scheel said as they have not picked a location for the 10th anniversary reunion yet. The planning committee is meeting in late November for the first time to help plan this event. The committee consists of five and 10 year graduates who will work together to decide on a location for the big event.
Andrew Kaszowski is from the first graduating class, who graduated in 2006. He was a Media Studies student with a focus on public relations. He is also on the committee who will eventually plan the 10th anniversary celebration.
“I’m just so proud of everything Guelph-Humber has become,” Kaszowski said as he looks forward to the 10th year anniversary.
“This being the first 10 year it’s a big celebration, let’s hear what the alums or grads want to see,” Scheel said.
Kaszowski attended the five year anniversary in 2011 and said it was very exciting for him, and the excitement is even greater for the 10 year anniversary.
As one of the first students to come into Guelph-Humber, Kaszowski said he had no idea what this school would be like, but this didn’t deter him.
“I was really attracted to an institution that was brand new,” Kasowski said. After looking at the credentials of both Guelph University and Humber College he decided that Guelph-Humber would be a great fit.
Since graduation Kaszowski still stays connected to many of the 2006 graduates. The school was so small at the time, so he was able to connect with many students a lot better.
Scheel said she feels very strongly about alumni staying connected to the University after graduation, and encourages students who are close to graduation to stay connected once they graduate.
Some graduates will come back to the University to handpick students to work with them, Scheel said, “if you’re in a competitive field and lots of people are looking for jobs, and there’s lots of openings, you can come back and handpick like-minded, successful, graduating students.”
With over 6000 alumni and counting, staying connected to other graduates can be very beneficial to your success now and in the future Scheel said.
Kaszowski said he wants students to remember that sometimes your plans after university isn’t always the way things will work out. He worked in jobs he never anticipated, such as a job on a cruise ship, and now runs his own business.
“The career is a journey, not a straight line. You can do all kinds of different things based on the skills and leadership experiences and personal development you get at Guelph-Humber,” Kaszowski said.
