Guelph-Humber remembers

If you are looking to show support for those who serve our country, you won’t have to look far. The University of Guelph-Humber is holding its very own Remembrance Day ceremony right in the school’s atrium on Nov. 11.

Liana Acri, Student Life Coordinator at the University of Guelph- Humber is partnering with volunteer students who are planning the ceremony.

“It’s a small service and it’s centered around the moment of silence,” Acri said.

You don’t have to wait until Nov. 11 to show your support.  Nov. 5-11 is Veterans Week. During this week a table will be set up in the atrium to promote what Acri calls the Postcards for Peace campaign.

“It allows students and members of our Guelph-Humber community to come and write a message, a thanks or appreciation to a Canadian veteran,” Acri said. These letters will be sent to the veterans after the Week of Remembrance.

“If students want to get involved we encourage them to stop by the table and write a message and to come out to the service on the day of,” Acri said.

The ceremony will begin at 10:50 am in the atrium.

Attending Remembrance Day ceremonies is extremely important this year because of the Ottawa shooting that occurred on Oct. 22 says Alison Furtado, an Officer Cadet in the Cadet Instructors Cadre.

“It’s important for me to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies because as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces I need to pay my respects to all of our fallen soldiers,” Furtado said.

Toronto is showing that they honour these fallen soldiers by having different ceremonies throughout the city. The Etobicoke Civic Centre located at 399 The West Mall is one of many.

Lizette Costa, Protocol Officer at the City of Toronto says the ceremony is interesting because it takes place indoors as well as outdoors.

Similar to the ceremony at Guelph-Humber, Costa says the Remembrance Day poem In Flanders Fields will be read and a moment of silence will take place.

This ceremony will start at 10:15 am.
